In short: Born in Boston and raised across seven different cities, Clark Gregg evolved from a struggling New York actor into a cornerstone of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Beyond his famous role as Phil Coulson, he is an accomplished screenwriter and director who has navigated everything from off-Broadway theater to major studio blockbusters.

Born on April 2, 1962, Clark Gregg spent his youth moving frequently due to his father's work as a professor and Episcopal priest. After attending Ohio Wesleyan University, he moved to Manhattan to pursue acting, working odd jobs such as a security guard at the Guggenheim Museum and a bar back before graduating from New York University in 1986. His early career was defined by his involvement with the Atlantic Theater Company, which he helped found in 1983.

Gregg's screenwriting career began in earnest with the 2000 thriller What Lies Beneath. He later wrote and directed the 2008 black comedy Choke, adapted from a Chuck Palahniuk novel, and the 2013 comedy-drama Trust Me. His acting portfolio is extensive, featuring roles in The West Wing, The New Adventures of Old Christine, and films like One Hour Photo and Being the Ricardos. He also holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

His most recognizable work, however, is his portrayal of Agent Phil Coulson. Initially a minor character in 2008's Iron Man, Coulson became a central figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gregg reprised the role across multiple films, including Thor and The Avengers, and led the ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. from 2013 to 2020. His commitment to the character extended to voice work in animated series and video games, cementing his place in modern superhero lore.
