From championing women's rights to architect of election challenges
In short: Cleta Mitchell's political evolution is a study in ideological transformation. Once a Democratic trailblazer who chaired the Oklahoma House Appropriations and Budget Committee, she pivoted to become a central figure in efforts to contest the 2020 presidential election results, moving from progressive reform to aggressive election monitoring.
Born in Oklahoma City in 1950, Mitchell began her career as a progressive advocate. In 1971, she helped found the Oklahoma Women's Political Caucus as a primary convener and advocated for the Equal Rights Amendment. During her tenure in the Oklahoma House of Representatives (1976–1984), she was a Democratic member who supported women's rights and progressive education reform. In 1981, she was even listed in Time magazine as one of the most promising Democratic women.
Her political trajectory shifted significantly in the 1990s. After an unsuccessful 1986 run for lieutenant governor, she moved to Washington, D.C., and eventually switched affiliations to the Republican Party in 1996. During this transition, she rescinded her support for the Equal Rights Amendment. She became a prominent conservative lawyer, representing figures like Donald Trump and the NRA, while also becoming a vocal critic of the IRS, eventually calling for the agency's abolition.
Mitchell gained national prominence for her role in the 2020 election aftermath. During a phone conversation on 2 January 2021, she took part as Donald Trump urged Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to change the certified outcomes. This involvement led to her resignation from the law firm Foley & Lardner. Since then, she has spearheaded the Election Integrity Network, which trains activists in "aggressive methods" like surveillance and poll-monitoring to challenge election systems and identify "friends or foes" among local officials.
