The day Britain turned its guns on a former ally
In short: In July 1940, Britain faced a harrowing dilemma: allow the French fleet to fall into Nazi hands or attack it themselves. This documentary reconstructs the violent confrontation at Mers-el-Kébir that changed the course of naval history.
Following the fall of France to Nazi Germany, British authorities feared Europe's most powerful warships would eventually be seized by Hitler. Negotiations in Algeria reached a breaking point on July 3, 1940, leading the British fleet to open fire at 5:55 PM.
The resulting attack turned the harbor into an inferno, sinking the battleship Bretagne and devastating the destroyer Mogador. More than 1,300 French sailors were killed in the engagement. Using historian insights and 3D CGI, the film explores the specific naval technology—including armor and heavy guns—that enabled such massive destruction.
