Manchester's massive new arena was designed to feel like the UK's largest nightclub
In short: Co-op Live, the United Kingdom's largest indoor arena, opened in Manchester in 2024 with a bold ambition: to prioritize acoustics and intimacy over conventional design. By pulling seating closer to the stage and lowering the ceiling, the venue aims to transform massive touring shows into an immersive, club-like experience.
Located in the Etihad Campus, Co-op Live represents a £365 million investment developed by the Oak View Group in partnership with City Football Group. The project, which received approval in September 2020, was conceived with a singular focus on live music. CEO Tim Leiweke noted that the design process started with music, avoiding the compromises often found in multipurpose arenas that attempt to accommodate every type of event equally.
The arena's architecture is engineered to enhance the fan experience. The bowl is roughly square, featuring retractable seating that allows for a maximum capacity of 23,500 attendees, including 7,500 standing spots. By minimizing the distance between the upper tiers and the stage, and positioning the Western seating roughly 20 metres closer than in traditional arenas, the venue creates a more intimate atmosphere. This configuration is supported by a lower ceiling height, specifically chosen to optimize acoustics for large-scale performances.
Despite its scale, the path to opening was turbulent. Originally scheduled to debut in April 2024, the venue faced multiple delays due to technical issues and power supply failures during test events. These setbacks forced the rescheduling of high-profile performances and even caused some artists, such as Take That, to move their shows to rival venues. The construction process also proved costly; in July 2024, contractor BAM Construct UK reported a £19.5 million loss linked to the project. However, since officially opening on 14 May 2024 with a performance by the band Elbow, the arena has established itself as a major hub for global talent, hosting everything from the MTV Europe Music Awards to future NBA games.
