From Cherokee territory to a high-income, highly educated American suburb
In short: Established in 1832 from land acquired from the Cherokee Nation, Cobb County has transformed from a cotton-farming region into a major economic engine. Today, it stands as Georgia's third most populous county, recognized for its high levels of education and significant role in the Atlanta metropolitan area.
Cobb County's history is deeply tied to the expansion of the American South. On December 3, 1832, the Georgia General Assembly created the county from land northwest of the Chattahoochee River. This land was acquired from the Cherokee Nation and redistributed to settlers through a lottery following the federal Indian Removal Act. Named for Thomas Willis Cobb, a U.S. senator and representative from Georgia, the county carries his name. Marietta, the county seat, likely derives its name from his wife, Mary.
The region's economy has undergone several radical shifts. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, cotton farming was a primary industry, peaking between the 1890s and 1920s. However, a price collapse—with cotton dropping from 16 cents per pound in 1920 to 9.5 cents in 1930—led to a significant cotton bust during the Great Depression. In the mid-20th century, the area transitioned toward defense manufacturing. During the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Lockheed Marietta became a leading manufacturer of military transport planes, such as the C-130 Hercules and the C-5 Galaxy.
Demographically, Cobb has evolved from a rural area into a diverse suburban hub. In the 1960s and 1970s, white flight from Atlanta contributed to its suburban transformation. By the 2020 Census, the population reached 766,149, making it the third most populous county in Georgia, trailing only Fulton and Gwinnett. The county has also been noted for its socio-economic metrics, ranking as the most educated county in Georgia in 2003 and being named the state's least obese county in October 2017.
