In short: Corte Madera, a Marin County town, takes its name from the Spanish command to chop wood. This once-forested area provided the essential redwood lumber used to construct the early city of San Francisco. Today, the town has evolved from a logging hub into a quiet, affluent residential community.

The town sits on land originally granted to John Reed in 1834 by the Mexican governor of the time, José Figueroa. Known as Rancho Corte Madera del Presidio, the area became a vital resource for the growing city of San Francisco. Reed capitalized on the massive supply of redwood trees, logging the timber and transporting it via Corte Madera Creek to build the Presidio and other early structures in the city.

By 1875, the North Pacific Coast Railroad arrived, transforming the local economy. The tracks allowed for the efficient transport of lumber on flatcars and eventually enabled passenger travel, connecting commuters to San Francisco via the Sausalito ferry. This accessibility spurred development, leading to the creation of the town's first subdivision by Frank Morrison Pixley in 1885. The town officially incorporated in 1916, and its growth accelerated significantly after the 1937 completion of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The historic center of the town remains anchored around the old train station square. Many structures from the turn of the 20th century still stand, including a hotel built by Swiss immigrant Jerry Adams in 1898 and the Holy Innocents church, constructed in 1901. While the town was once defined by its timber industry, it is now a modern suburb with a 2023 median household income estimated at $220,771. Today, the area balances its historical preservation efforts with its role as a hub for retail and education.
