From a single denim jacket to a global retail empire
In short: Nigel Austin sold his first denim jacket in 1988, sparking a retail journey that would eventually span 18 countries. Today, the Cotton On Group manages a complex web of eight distinct brands, balancing massive global scale with a diverse portfolio ranging from stationery to sustainable fashion.
Founded in 1991 with its first store in Geelong, Australia, Cotton On has evolved into a multi-brand powerhouse. By 2020, the group operated over 1,500 stores globally, employing 22,000 people. The company's portfolio includes well-known names like Cotton On Kids (launched 2004), Cotton On Body (2007), Factorie (2007), Rubi (2008), and the stationery brand Typo. It also acquired the youth brand Supré in 2013 and launched Ceres Life in 2020, a brand specifically targeting women over 30 with a focus on recycled and organic materials.
The group's operational model relies on a horizontal division of labor. While the Australian design team controls production steps from merchandise planning to specifications, manufacturing is outsourced to approximately 850 suppliers and factories worldwide. The majority of these suppliers are concentrated in China, Bangladesh, India, and Australia, with additional sourcing from Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, and the United States. This logistical scale has allowed for rapid international expansion, reaching 19 countries by 2006.
However, this massive supply chain has faced significant scrutiny. In 2019, following reports of forced labor in Xinjiang cotton fields, the group conducted an internal investigation and announced it would stop buying from the region due to human rights concerns. The company has also faced regulatory hurdles, including a $1 million fine in 2012 for selling children's sleepwear with misleading fire safety labels. Despite these challenges, the group maintains a massive footprint, boasting over 2.4 million members in its loyalty program.
The company's structure can sometimes be confusing for observers. For instance, the liquidation of Cotton On Asia Pte Ltd in March 2026 was a separate corporate event that did not impact the broader Cotton On Group operations, as the two were distinct holding companies. This distinction highlights the complexity of a retail giant that manages multiple regional entities and brands simultaneously.
