How a 1990s alternative rock band survived decades of lineup shifts
In short: From the top of the Modern Rock charts to a class action lawsuit against Spotify, Cracker has navigated the volatile landscape of American rock for over thirty years. Discover how David Lowery and Johnny Hickman built a lasting legacy through genre-blending sounds and a devoted fanbase known as Crumbs.
Formed in 1990 by David Lowery and Johnny Hickman, Cracker emerged from the dissolution of Lowery's previous group, Camper Van Beethoven. The duo, childhood friends who had previously lived in Redlands, California, moved to Richmond, Virginia, where they recorded the 'Big Dirty Yellow Demos.' This early period established a sonic identity that blended rock, punk, grunge, psychedelia, country, blues, and folk.
The band's commercial peak arrived in the early 1990s under Virgin Records. Their 1992 self-titled debut featured the No. 1 hit 'Teen Angst (What the World Needs Now)' and sold over 200,000 copies. This was followed in 1993 by Kerosene Hat, their best-selling album, which moved nearly half a million copies and neared platinum status. This era included notable covers, such as the Grateful Dead's 'Loser,' and appearances in films like Clueless and Empire Records.
Despite shifting musical tides in the mid-90s that moved away from guitar-driven alternative rock, Cracker maintained a steady presence. While albums like The Golden Age and Forever saw more moderate or limited commercial success, the band cultivated a loyal following in the US and Europe called 'Crumbs.' The lineup has been famously fluid, featuring various drummers like Michael Urbano and Charlie Quintana, and bassists including Davey Faragher, Bob Rupe, and Sal Maida.
In later years, the band's trajectory included independent releases, collaborations with bluegrass artists like Leftover Salmon, and even legal battles, such as a 2015 class action lawsuit against Spotify regarding music licensing. Even as members passed away—including Bob Rupe and Sal Maida in 2025—the core partnership of Lowery and Hickman has remained a constant since the band's inception.
