How a Midwesterner’s vision survived the tragic collapse of her original rock band
In short: Formed in 1978 by Akron native Chrissie Hynde, the Pretenders defined the post-punk era with raw, shimmering guitar textures. Yet, just as they reached global stardom, the group was decimated by drug-related tragedy. Hynde’s refusal to quit transformed the band into an enduring, shape-shifting institution of the rock era.
Chrissie Hynde, raised on 1960s rock radio in Akron, Ohio, moved to London in 1973 with ambitions of becoming a serious songwriter. After brief, unfulfilling stints in early punk bands, she secured a demo deal that led to the formation of the Pretenders. The original lineup—Hynde, bassist Pete Farndon, guitarist James Honeyman-Scott, and drummer Martin Chambers—quickly achieved massive success. Their 1980 self-titled debut topped the U.K. charts, while the hit single "Brass in Pocket" reached number 14 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
The band’s momentum was shattered by the excesses of touring and addiction. In June 1982, Farndon was dismissed from the group due to his drug use. Only two days later, Honeyman-Scott died from a cocaine overdose. Less than a year later, in April 1983, Farndon also died after drowning while under the influence of heroin. These losses left Hynde and Chambers to navigate the wreckage of their original vision, determined to keep the music alive despite the profound personal grief.
Hynde and Chambers rebuilt the group, recruiting new members to record the 1984 album "Learning to Crawl." This record became their most commercially successful, featuring iconic tracks like "Back on the Chain Gang" and "Middle of the Road." Although the band’s lineup continued to evolve over the following decades—with Chambers even departing in 1986 before returning in 1994—the Pretenders remained a persistent force. Their longevity and influence were formally recognized in 2005 when they were admitted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
