In short: Danville, Pennsylvania, evolved from a strategic Susquehanna River settlement into a 19th-century industrial powerhouse. Once a center for iron production that supplied the nation's expanding railroads, the borough has transformed into a regional medical hub, anchored by the Geisinger Medical Center, while preserving its deep, complex history.

The land surrounding Danville was originally held by the Susquehannock, an Iroquoian-speaking people who controlled the Susquehanna River drainage basin. By the mid-17th century, they were a formidable power, well-armed through trade with Dutch settlers. However, the Susquehannock were decimated by epidemic diseases between 1668 and 1672, leading to their eventual collapse and absorption into other tribes by 1678. The area remained Iroquois land until a 1768 treaty opened it to European settlement.

In the late 18th century, William Montgomery established a farm and trading post at the site, which was later named Danville after his son, Daniel. By the mid-19th century, the town became a critical transportation node, utilizing canal boats and railroads to move coal and iron. The Montour Iron Company, a major local employer, is famously associated with the production of the first T-rail in the United States, an innovation that helped fuel the nation's industrial growth. As iron production declined in the 20th century, the town pivoted toward healthcare.

Today, Danville is defined by the Geisinger Medical Center, a tertiary referral center founded in 1915 by Abigail Geisinger. The institution, modeled after the Mayo Clinic, now serves as a primary economic driver for the region. Despite its modern medical focus, the borough retains its historical character, with several sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the General William Montgomery House and the Thomas Beaver Free Library. Efforts are currently underway to repurpose the town's industrial past, such as clearing the old North Branch Canal towpath to create recreational greenways along the river.
