The DC Extended Universe was a fan-coined term that eventually became official studio branding.
In short: The shared cinematic universe based on DC Comics characters was never officially named by the studio at its inception. Fans and media adopted the term DC Extended Universe, a moniker coined jokingly by a journalist in 2015, which Warner Bros. only embraced years later as the franchise evolved and expanded.
The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) began as an attempt by Warner Bros. to build a cohesive shared universe following the success of Man of Steel in 2013. While the studio had explored various crossover projects as early as 2002, including a shelved Batman vs. Superman film and a canceled Justice League project in 2008, it was not until the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 that the franchise truly took shape. The studio initially lacked a formal name for this interconnected series of films, leading fans and media outlets to apply the label DC Extended Universe (DCEU) in 2015. This term was coined by Keith Staskiewicz in an Entertainment Weekly article, and although DC confirmed in 2017 that it was not an internal designation, the name persisted.
The franchise's branding remained fluid for years. Executives and promotional materials experimented with various titles, including Justice League Universe and Worlds of DC, before the studio finally adopted the DCEU title upon the launch of HBO Max in May 2020. Throughout its run, the DCEU faced significant creative shifts. Following the mixed reception of early films, Warner Bros. established DC Films in 2016 to provide a more unified direction. The franchise eventually expanded beyond the big screen into television with the 2022 series Peacemaker.
The DCEU concluded its 15-film run with the 2023 release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The franchise, which grossed over $7 billion globally, underwent a major restructuring in late 2022 when James Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed to lead the newly formed DC Studios. Their vision for a rebooted DC Universe (DCU) officially began in 2024, serving as a spiritual successor to the DCEU. While some characters and actors transitioned into this new continuity, the transition marked a definitive end to the era of the DCEU, a project that began with the goal of rivaling the most successful superhero franchises in cinematic history.
