How a Nigerian-American music star turned a university degree into a global cultural movement
In short: Born in Atlanta and raised in Lagos, Davido has become one of Africa's most influential artists. From his early days making beats in a college dorm to selling out London's O2 Arena, he has bridged the gap between Afrobeats, hip hop, and R&B, while becoming a prominent voice for human rights.
David Adedeji Adeleke, professionally known as Davido, was born in Atlanta in 1992 to a Nigerian business magnate and a university lecturer. After spending his formative years in Lagos, he returned to the United States at age 16 to study business administration at Oakwood University. It was there that he began producing music, eventually dropping out to pursue a career in the industry full-time. His path to stardom was unconventional; he later enrolled at Babcock University in Nigeria, where his father famously funded the creation of a music department specifically for his inaugural class of one student.
Davido's professional rise began in 2011 with the release of his debut single, 'Back When'. He quickly gained momentum with 'Dami Duro', a track that propelled him to fame despite early critical pushback regarding his songwriting. Over the following decade, he navigated complex record deals with Sony Music and RCA, eventually founding his own label, Davido Music Worldwide. His 2017 singles 'If' and 'Fall' became global phenomena, with 'Fall' setting records as the longest-charting Nigerian pop song in Billboard history. His 2023 album, 'Timeless', further cemented his status, blending amapiano with dancehall and highlife to reach a global audience.
Beyond his musical output, Davido has used his platform for significant social impact. In 2021, he launched a viral fundraising campaign, asking fans and colleagues to send him money; he ultimately raised 200 million naira, added 50 million of his own funds, and donated the entire sum to orphanages across Nigeria. Now a cultural ambassador and an Officer of the Order of the Niger, Davido remains a central figure in the global expansion of African music. His career continues to evolve, with his fifth studio album, '5ive', released in April 2025, marking another chapter in his enduring influence on the international stage.
