From Kansas high school standout to NBA contract powerhouse
In short: Before signing a $39 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, Dean Wade navigated the grueling path of an undrafted player. His journey from the small towns of Kansas to the NBA spotlight reveals the persistence required to move from a two-way contract to a major franchise cornerstone.
Dean Jackson Wade’s ascent began in the Kansas basketball circuit. A standout at St. John High School, Wade earned All-State honors and was part of three state championship teams. A Parade All-American selection, he joined just 29 peers in his year through this national accolade, also receiving the Mr. the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association's Mr. Kansas Basketball award.
Wade transitioned to the collegiate level with the Kansas State Wildcats, where his performance evolved significantly each year. After earning Big 12 All-Newcomer honors as a freshman, he became a primary scoring threat, averaging 16.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game during a breakout junior season. Despite a foot injury cutting his senior year short, his collegiate dominance set the stage for professional opportunities.
The professional path was not immediate. Wade joined the Cleveland Cavaliers on a two-way deal following his 2019 undrafted status. He spent much of his rookie season refining his game with the Canton Charge in the G League, where he averaged 14.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. His time in Cleveland was marked by significant milestones, including participating in an NBA record-setting performance where he, Kevin Love, and Donovan Mitchell combined for 22 three-pointers in a single game.
Wade's career trajectory eventually led to a major financial and professional shift. He joined the Philadelphia 76ers on a $39 million, four-year deal in July 2026, after consistent Cleveland years that featured a landmark 22-point fourth-quarter rally versus Boston in March 2024.
