The party that survived a revolution only to fracture from within
In short: Born from the ashes of a communist state, Mongolia's Democratic Party became a symbol of transition. Yet, its history is defined by a paradox: while it successfully ousted a one-party regime, internal fractures and leadership disputes have frequently left it struggling to maintain a unified front.
The Democratic Party (DP) traces its roots to the 1990 Democratic Revolution, where intellectuals and students demanded free markets and fair elections. This movement dismantled the single-party communist state, leading to the formation of several opposition groups in early 1990. The DP was eventually established on December 6, 2000—a date chosen to commemorate the founding of the Mongol Empire in 1206. It emerged as a merger of five distinct opposition parties seeking democratic and economic reforms.
The party's journey has been marked by dramatic shifts in power and governance. In 1996, its coalition ousted the long-ruling Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP) for the first time since 1921. However, this era was plagued by 'rampant party infighting' and unstable governance, resulting in four different governments led by the Democratic Union Coalition between 1996 and 2000. By the 2000 parliamentary election, internal splits and the murder of key revolutionary leader Sanjaasürengiin Zorig in 1998 contributed to an electoral wipeout where the party won only a single seat.
Modern history shows a cycle of cooperation and conflict. In 2012, the DP joined a coalition government during a mining-driven economic boom, but faced scandals involving massive mismanagement of large-scale bonds like the Chinggis Bond. Internal tensions peaked again in 2021 when the party split into pro- and anti-Battulga camps. This division was so severe that two different primaries were held for the presidency, with supporters even launching hunger strikes in Sükhbaatar Square to protest the General Election Commission's decisions.
