In short: In 2013, the BBC reimagined the Regency era by blending the elegance of Pride and Prejudice with the suspense of a modern whodunit. This three-part drama transports viewers to 1803, where a festive ball at Pemberley is shattered by gunshots and a sudden, violent death.

Death Comes to Pemberley, a three-part British television drama, was released on BBC One between 26 and 28 December 2013. Based on P. D. James's 2011 bestselling novel, the series serves as a stylistic successor to Jane Austen's 1813 masterpiece, Pride and Prejudice. The narrative is set in June 1803, six years after the marriage of Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy.

The plot takes a dark turn when George Wickham and his wife, Lydia, travel by carriage toward Pemberley for a ball with Captain Denny. Following an argument between Wickham and Denny, the men disappear into the woods, where Lydia hears two gunshots. A subsequent search party led by Darcy discovers a hysterical Wickham holding the body of the deceased Denny.

Critics reacted to this stylistic departure with varied perspectives. The Guardian noted the series functioned as a 'mashup' of period drama and detective fiction, akin to Agatha Christie or Midsomer Murders. While some praised its high production values and 'meaty' plot, others focused on its ability to remain respectful to Austen's original characters while forging a distinct identity.

To capture the grandeur of the era, production utilized several historic locations. Chatsworth House in Derbyshire served as the exterior for Pemberley, while indoor scenes were filmed at Chatsworth, Castle Howard, and Harewood House in Yorkshire. Other National Trust sites, including Fountains Abbey and Hardcastle Crags, provided additional backdrops for the production.
