A posthumous tribute born from a director's sudden death in Russia
In short: When director Jeeva suffered a fatal cardiac arrest in Saint Petersburg during production, his film Dhaam Dhoom became a race against time. Completed by his widow and assistant, the thriller explores an Indian doctor’s harrowing journey through the Russian legal system after being framed for murder.
Dhaam Dhoom is a 2008 Tamil-language action thriller based on the American film Red Corner. The narrative follows Gautham Subramaniam, an Indian doctor who travels to Russia for a medical conference. While in Moscow, he encounters Anna, a woman who unknowingly leaves behind a jacket containing drugs. After spending time with her at a nightclub, Gautham is arrested and accused of her murder when she is found dead the following morning.
The production faced a tragic turning point on June 26, 2007, when director Jeeva died during filming in Saint Petersburg. G. finished the undertaking later. K. Anees, Manikandan's spouse, worked beneath P.'s direction. C. Sriram. This posthumous release served as a tribute to Jeeva's vision, featuring a cast that included Kangana Ranaut, who made her Tamil debut in the film after replacing Reema Sen due to creative differences.
The story highlights the complexities of international legal struggles and cultural barriers, noting that Gautham struggled with the Russian language and unfamiliar surroundings. The plot reveals a conspiracy involving drug trafficking from Chennai to Russia, where the antagonist Raghavan orchestrated Anna's death to protect his operations. The film eventually saw a successful opening in Chennai and reached the United Kingdom box office, where it earned £37,050 in its second week of release.
Critically, the film received mixed reviews; while some praised its logic and music, others noted a lack of tempo in the screenplay. Despite these critiques, it remains a significant piece of Tamil cinema history due to its unique production circumstances—a project finished by a grieving team to honor a fallen creator.
