The high-tech hunt for the world's most hunted drug lord
In short: Pablo Escobar didn't just hide in caves; he lived in a middle-class neighborhood, evading elite forces using voice disguises and short phone calls. His downfall came when a single lapse in communication allowed the government to use French and British technology to triangulate his final location.
By October 1992, Escobar had lost significant power as his chief of bodyguards was killed by police. Despite this, he remained a primary target for the Colombian government, the U.S. government, and rivals like Los Pepes and the Cali Cartel. He attempted to move his family to Europe, but they were intercepted in Germany by authorities warned by both the DEA and Colombian police, leading to their detention in Bogotá.
The government exploited Escobar's devotion to his family by placing them in a hotel where phones were tapped. Knowing this, Escobar developed a strict routine: he would only speak for less than two minutes at a time and often faked his voice to sound like a reporter. However, on December 2, 1993, during a call following his 44th birthday, he spoke for over two minutes. This allowed the Search Bloc to use technology provided by the United States to pinpoint his house in Medellín's Los Olivos neighborhood.
The ensuing shootout on the roof left Escobar's death shrouded in mystery. While some argue he committed suicide—aligning with his stated preference for a grave in Colombia over a U.S. prison—others point to specific figures like Colonel Hugo Heliodoro Aguilar or paramilitary leaders as the shooters. Despite his criminal reign, Escobar maintained a 'Robin Hood' image; over 25,000 people attended his funeral, and some locals still view him as a saint.
