How a childhood throw from fifty metres launched a record-breaking cricket career
In short: Deepti Sharma is a transformative force in Indian cricket, evolving from a young talent spotted at an Agra stadium to a global icon. Her career is defined by historic partnerships, record-setting bowling spells, and a unique ability to dominate both batting and bowling, culminating in unprecedented World Cup performances.
Born in 1997, Deepti Sharma’s trajectory shifted during a practice session at the Ekalavya Sports Stadium in Agra. While watching her brother, she executed a precise throw that hit the stumps from fifty metres away, catching the eye of selector Hemlata Kala. This early display of accuracy foreshadowed a career defined by exceptional skill and versatility as an all-rounder.
Sharma’s impact on the international stage is marked by statistical milestones. In a 2017 match against Ireland, she and Poonam Raut established a world record opening partnership of 320 runs, with Sharma contributing 188. This performance eclipsed previous records held by both men and women. Her bowling prowess is equally formidable, highlighted by career-best figures of 6-20 against Sri Lanka in Ranchi and a historic hat-trick for the UP Warriorz in the 2024 Women's Premier League.
Her dominance reached a new peak during the 2025 Women's Cricket World Cup. As the tournament's Most Valuable Player, she achieved a feat unmatched by any male or female player in history: scoring over 200 runs while simultaneously taking more than 20 wickets in a single edition. Beyond the pitch, her contributions have been formally recognized, including the Jagmohan Dalmiya Trophy and her 2025 appointment as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in Uttar Pradesh.
Today, Sharma’s influence extends across global leagues, from the Women's Premier League to the WBBL and The Hundred. Whether representing India in World Cups or domestic teams like Bengal and UP Warriorz, she remains a central figure in the sport. Her journey from a young spectator in Agra to a decorated police officer and world-class athlete underscores a relentless commitment to excellence in every facet of the game.
