Engineering a 13-kilometer highway across the open Indian Ocean
In short: Discover how engineers conquered one of the harshest environments on Earth to build a road where no land exists. This documentary explores the massive logistical and structural feats required to create a permanent path over the sea.
Located off the coast of Réunion Island, this megaproject is a hybrid structure serving as both a breakwater and a viaduct. It was specifically engineered to endure tropical cyclones, monster waves, and constant marine erosion. The construction required 83 million tons of rock, steel, and concrete. By employing remarkable equipment, staff managed to mould the ocean floor and position 5,000-ton concrete units with extreme precision.
