From Ponzi scheme leader to the head of a breakaway republic
In short: Before rising to power in the Donetsk People's Republic, Denis Pushilin was a key figure in a notorious pyramid scheme. His journey from a failed Ukrainian parliamentary candidate to a central figure in Russia's annexation of Ukrainian territories is a complex study of political upheaval.
Denis Pushiliov’s political ascent is inextricably linked to his earlier involvement in the financial world. Between 2011 and 2013, Pushilin served as a leader for the successor to MMM, a massive Russian Ponzi scheme that had previously cost participants millions of dollars. This organization, which openly admitted to being a pyramid scheme, provided the foundation for his later political activities, including his 2012 membership in the MMM Party.
His transition to separatist leadership began in April 2014, when he led a rally in Donetsk demanding a referendum on independence from Kyiv. Following the assassination of the incumbent leader, Alexander Zakharchenko, in August 2018, Pushilin assumed the role of acting head of state. He later secured a full term in the controversial 2018 elections, claiming 60.85% of the vote.
The geopolitical stakes escalated significantly in 2022. Following the signing of a mutual assistance agreement with the Russian Federation in February, Pushilin participated in the September 2022 referendums. While the Donetsk region reported a 99% approval for joining Russia, the process faced widespread international condemnation. By late September, he was present in Moscow for President Putin's formal announcement of the annexation of Southern and Eastern Ukraine.
Pushilin's career has been marked by intense international scrutiny and legal repercussions. He has been subject to sanctions from the US, EU, UK, Canada, and several other nations. In December 2023, a Ukrainian court sentenced him in absentia to 15 years in prison for charges including collaborationist activities and encroachment on Ukraine's territorial integrity.
