From player to manager: the diverse career of Derek McInnes
In short: A former Scotland international, Derek McInnes has navigated the highs of domestic trophies and European qualification, alongside the challenges of relegation battles and managerial dismissals. His journey spans top-flight clubs in Scotland and England, evolving from a midfielder into a significant figure in the Scottish Premiership.
Born in 1971, McInnes began his professional journey as a teenager in 1988 with Greenock Morton. His playing career saw him represent several notable clubs, including Rangers, West Bromwich Albion, and Dundee United. During his time in the English Premier League with West Brom, he achieved the distinction of being the first player for the club to be sent off in that division, occurring in August 2002 against Manchester United. He also earned two international caps for Scotland while playing for West Bromwich Albion. During his time at Rangers, he secured a domestic treble by winning the Scottish Cup in 1999.
As a manager, McInnes has demonstrated significant resilience. After a difficult tenure at Bristol City, where he was dismissed in January 2013, he took charge of Aberdeen in March 2013. His time at Aberdeen was marked by notable successes, including winning the Scottish League Cup in 2014—the club's first trophy in 19 years—and securing multiple runners-up finishes in the Scottish Premiership. His leadership at Aberdeen included leading the team to several cup finals. He was also recognised as the PFA Scotland Manager of the Year following his successes with the Dons.
McInnes's managerial path continued with Kilmarnock, where he secured promotion to the Scottish Premiership in 2022 and achieved European qualification in 2024. This success led to his appointment as head coach of Hearts at the end of the 2024–25 season, where he achieved their highest league finish in 20 years. His career has come full circle with his appointment as manager of the Scottish Premiership club Rangers. Before his move to Hearts, he guided Kilmarnock to a Championship title. His professional career originally started as a teenager at Greenock Morton.
