In short: Formed in 2002, Despised Icon helped define the deathcore genre with their signature blasting drums and dual vocalists. After years of relentless touring, the band famously disbanded in 2010 to pursue family life and careers, only to defy expectations with a permanent return and a prolific second act.

Originating in Montreal, Quebec, in January 2002, Despised Icon quickly established themselves as a foundational force in deathcore alongside peers like Antagony and The Red Chord. The group gained notoriety for the technical precision of drummer Alex Pelletier and the aggressive interplay between vocalists Alex Erian and Steve Marois. Their early trajectory was marked by rapid evolution, moving from their self-financed debut to a worldwide deal with Century Media by 2005, which facilitated the release of their second album, The Healing Process.

By 2010, the rigors of the music industry—constant travel and long absences from home—collided with the personal milestones of the band members. Seeking to start families and establish stable careers, the group decided to conclude their run, performing a final series of shows in December 2010 across Toronto and Montreal. This departure was framed as a deliberate choice to end their tenure while the band remained cohesive, rather than allowing the project to fade through attrition.

The hiatus proved temporary. Following a series of reunion performances in 2014 and 2015, the band officially reformed in April 2016. This second chapter has been remarkably productive, resulting in the release of three additional full-length albums, including Beast in 2016, Purgatory in 2019, and Shadow Work in 2025. By maintaining a consistent lineup and navigating the balance between professional music and personal lives, Despised Icon has managed to sustain a career spanning over two decades, proving that the intensity of their sound is not incompatible with the realities of long-term growth.
