How Lufthansa launched a dedicated leisure airline to dominate the Mediterranean and beyond
In short: Born from the need to capture the leisure travel market, Discover Airlines emerged as a strategic arm of Lufthansa. Operating from Frankfurt and Munich, this carrier has rapidly reshaped its network, shifting from its origins as Eurowings Discover to a distinct identity focused on connecting travelers to global vacation hotspots.
Discover Airlines, legally known as EW Discover GmbH, began its journey on 24 July 2021 under the name Eurowings Discover. Initially launching with a single Airbus A330 to serve Mombasa and Zanzibar, the airline was designed to compete directly with Condor, a German leisure carrier that was once part of the Lufthansa group. By adopting the branding of its sister company, Eurowings, the airline quickly established a presence in the competitive leisure sector, aiming to consolidate routes that Lufthansa deemed better suited for a dedicated leisure-focused operator.
The airline's growth was rapid and strategic. By late 2021, the network had expanded to include destinations such as Punta Cana, Windhoek, Victoria Falls, Las Vegas, and Mauritius. To support this, the fleet was planned to reach a total of 10 A320s and 11 A330s by mid-2022. Lufthansa further bolstered this expansion in September 2021 by transferring responsibility for various mid-haul leisure routes to the carrier, including five destinations in the Canary Islands served by A320-200 aircraft based in Frankfurt.
Operational shifts defined the airline's evolution. In summer 2022, a second base was opened at Munich Airport to handle short-haul Mediterranean flights. However, by late 2022, the strategy pivoted; the airline consolidated its long-haul operations at Frankfurt Airport, terminating North American and Caribbean services from Munich. This move followed the airline's takeover of specific North American routes from its parent company, Lufthansa, which had been struggling with staff shortages. In September 2023, the company rebranded as Discover Airlines, cementing its current identity while maintaining its headquarters at the Frankfurt Airport Center.
