How a Spanish airline built a niche by connecting Europe's smaller regional cities
In short: Founded by the creators of Vueling, Volotea carved a unique path in the competitive European aviation market. By focusing on underserved routes across the Mediterranean and beyond, the airline has grown from a small startup into an award-winning carrier, despite navigating complex shifts in fleet, ownership, and regional political crises.
Volotea was established in Barcelona by Carlos Muñoz and Lázaro Ros, the founders of Vueling. The name is derived from the Spanish verb revolotear, meaning to fly around. The airline officially launched operations on 5 April 2012, departing from Venice Marco Polo Airport. From its inception, the company was backed by private-equity funds, including Axis Participaciones Empresariales, Corpfin Capital, and the US-based CCMP Capital, which held 49% of voting rights. Before its first flight, the airline raised over €50 million.
The carrier initially distinguished itself by operating the Boeing 717, becoming the last European airline to fly the type before retiring its final 19 aircraft in January 2021. Following a strategic pivot, the company transitioned to an all-Airbus A320 family fleet. This evolution reflects the airline's broader operational volatility; while it operated nearly 300 routes by summer 2018, it has frequently adjusted its network, closing 40 of its first 90 routes within two years and shuttering its Genoa base in 2022.
Volotea’s business model targets a mix of leisure travelers, who make up 50% of its passenger base, alongside those visiting friends and relatives. Its network spans Southern and Western Europe, with a focus on the Mediterranean coast. In 2024, the airline received recognition as the Best Low-Cost Airline in Europe by Skytrax. Despite its growth and reach, the company has faced significant challenges, including a change of headquarters to Asturias in 2017 due to the Spanish constitutional crisis and ongoing financial hurdles, having remained non-profitable since 2014.
