The legal giant that grew from four distinct firm origins
In short: How does a law firm become one of the largest in the world? DLA Piper’s history is a masterclass in strategic mergers, evolving from four separate entities into a global network spanning over 40 countries and 80 offices.
DLA Piper was established in 2005 through a massive three-way merger involving Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich LLP (San Diego), Piper Rudnick LLP (Baltimore), and DLA LLP (United Kingdom). This consolidation created one of the world's largest law firms at the time, as well as the largest firm in the United Kingdom. Four separate entities, including Rudnick & Wolfe, Piper & Marbury, Alsop Stevens, and Dibb Lupton Broomhead, comprise the original foundations of the company.
The organizational structure of DLA Piper is a Swiss Verein, which allows multiple partnerships to operate under a shared global network. This model has facilitated rapid international expansion. By 2012, DLA became the world's largest firm by headcount, boasting over 4,000 attorneys. Since its inception, the firm has aggressively expanded its footprint, opening offices in regions ranging from Mexico City and São Paulo to Doha, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
Beyond mere growth, the firm has navigated complex legal and political landscapes. It has been involved in high-profile litigation, such as representing Paul Ceglia in a claim involving Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook—a case where the firm's confidence in a document was later challenged as fraudulent. Politically, the firm maintains a significant presence, with employees serving as major donors to federal campaigns and a roster of high-ranking former officials, including former prime ministers and US senators, serving as advisors and partners.
