Tanzania's capital Dodoma was designed to be a village in a nation of villages.
In short: Born from a colonial market town, Dodoma was envisioned as a socialist heartland that rejected the rigid grid-iron plans of traditional capitals. Instead of monumental hierarchy, it sought to harmonize with the local topography. Today, it stands as a unique administrative experiment that took decades to finally come to fruition.
Founded in 1907 by German colonists during the construction of the central railway, Dodoma began as a small market town called Idodomya. Following Tanzania's independence, the government sought a more central location to replace Dar es Salaam, aiming to foster socialist unity and avoid the congestion and colonial planning mistakes of the coastal city. In 1974, a nationwide referendum confirmed the move, with the government selecting Dodoma for its agreeable climate and its position as a crossroads in the geographic center of the nation.
The master plan, developed by the Canadian firm Project Planning Associates, envisioned a city that would function as the chief village in a nation of villages. Unlike the monumental designs of cities like Brasília or Washington, D.C., Dodoma was intended to undulate with the existing landscape, prioritizing public transport over the private car. The city was designed as a garden city, featuring green belts that separated residential zones from industrial areas. Despite these ambitious goals, the relocation process faced significant delays, with many government offices and embassies resisting the move for decades.
The transition gained momentum under President John Magufuli, who pushed for the relocation of ministries, followed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who inaugurated the new State House in May 2023. This historic event solidified the city's role as the administrative capital. While Dar es Salaam remains the commercial and maritime hub, Dodoma has seen a population surge, growing from 410,956 in 2012 to 765,179 by 2022. Today, the city is connected to the coast by both the historic central railway and a modern electrified Standard Gauge Railway, which officially commenced commercial passenger services in August 2024.
