From viral cow memes to pop-rap royalty: the meteoric rise of Doja Cat
In short: Born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, Doja Cat transformed from a SoundCloud hobbyist into a defining pop star of her era. Her journey from the Sai Anantam Ashram to global chart dominance reveals a relentless, often turbulent pursuit of artistic identity, marked by viral hits, genre-bending albums, and a complex public persona.
Born in 1995 in the Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles, Dlamini’s early life was defined by movement and spiritual immersion. After living in New York, she spent four years at the Sai Anantam Ashram in Agoura Hills, a commune directed by jazz musician Alice Coltrane. This period of her childhood, spent practicing Hinduism and singing bhajans, stood in stark contrast to her later life in the Los Angeles underground hip-hop scene. By age 16, she dropped out of high school, struggling with ADHD and a feeling of stagnation, to focus entirely on music.
Her breakthrough was anything but linear. After early independent releases like 2014's Purrr!, she faced a period of creative limbo and label indifference. The turning point arrived in 2018 with the viral success of 'Mooo!', a novelty song where she fantasized about being a cow. This internet-native approach proved her marketability, leading to the commercial success of her second album, Hot Pink, and the chart-topping 'Say So'. By 2021, her third album, Planet Her, solidified her status, becoming the first project by a female rapper to spend over six months in the top ten of the Billboard 200.
Despite her commercial achievements, Dlamini has maintained a fraught relationship with her own output. She has publicly denounced her earlier 'digestible pop' work as 'cash grabs' and expressed deep frustration with the pressures of fame, even declaring in 2022 that 'music is dead' to her. Her 2023 album, Scarlet, marked a deliberate pivot toward a darker, rap-oriented aesthetic. This stylistic shift, alongside her candid, often humorous internet presence, continues to define her as one of the most unpredictable and influential figures in modern music.
