In short: While many assume Texas cities are defined by their rivers or lakes, Dumas is a high-plains community where water is scarce. Covering just over five square miles, this county seat is better known for its cattle industry and musical legacy than for its aquatic landscape.

Located roughly 40 miles north of Amarillo, Dumas serves as the seat of Moore County. The city was named for its founder, Louis Dumas, who lived from 1856 to 1923. Despite its modest size, the city maintains a distinct identity, bolstered by its claim to the 1920s song 'I'm a Ding Dong Daddy From Dumas.' While the song's origin is sometimes contested by a namesake town in Arkansas, Dumas, Texas, maintains that it is the true inspiration, citing documentation to support its case.

The physical geography of Dumas is dominated by land rather than water. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city spans a total area of 5.52 square miles. Of this, 5.5 square miles consist of land, while water accounts for a mere 0.019 square miles, or approximately 0.34 percent of the total area. This semiarid environment, classified as BSk under the Köppen climate system, reflects the broader conditions of the Texas Panhandle.

Economically and socially, the region is tied to large-scale agriculture. A major meatpacking plant located in nearby Cactus serves as a primary employer for the county. Now owned by the Brazilian conglomerate JBS USA, the facility processes up to 5,000 head of cattle daily. This industrial activity supports a diverse, largely immigrant workforce, which is served by the Dumas Independent School District. The district manages several schools, including a National Blue Ribbon elementary school, and coordinates with a branch of Amarillo College to provide local educational opportunities.
