How a windy hill became one of the world's most populous urban centers
In short: Ecatepec de Morelos, whose name means windy hill in Nahuatl, has transformed from an ancient Aztec city-state into a massive industrial suburb of Mexico City. Home to over 1.6 million people, this sprawling municipality now balances its deep historical roots with the complex infrastructure demands of modern urban life.
The history of Ecatepec stretches back to ancient times, with human habitation evidence found on the Cerro de Ecatepec. During the Aztec Empire, the area served as a critical altepetl, or city-state, strategically positioned to control northern trade routes. Its rulers, known as tlatoque, maintained close dynastic ties to the leadership of Tenochtitlan. Following the Spanish conquest, the region underwent significant administrative shifts, transitioning from an encomienda granted to an Aztec princess in 1527 to a designated Indian Republic, before eventually falling under Spanish mayorship in the 17th century.
The modern identity of the municipality was solidified in the 19th century. It was officially created on October 13, 1874, and received its current name in honor of José María Morelos y Pavón, a hero of the Mexican War of Independence who was executed there in 1815. The area remained relatively quiet until the 1970s, when rural migration to the Valley of Mexico triggered a period of explosive population growth. By 2010, Ecatepec had become the most populous municipality in Mexico, though this rapid expansion has since stabilized.
Today, Ecatepec functions as a vital industrial and commercial hub. It hosts major headquarters like Jumex and contains Multiplaza Aragón, which was identified as Mexico's busiest shopping center as of 2018. To manage its dense population, the city relies on a sophisticated transit network, including the Mexico City Metro, the Mexibús rapid transit system, and the Mexicable—a pioneering aerial cable car system designed to navigate the region's challenging hilly terrain. Despite its industrial nature, the municipality retains ecological pockets in the Sierra de Guadalupe, home to native flora and small wildlife.
