The Cuban boxer who escaped a lifetime ban by fleeing to Mexico
In short: In 2007, Erislandy Lara was a golden boy of Cuban amateur boxing. But after a failed defection in Brazil led to an indefinite ban from his homeland, he had to find a way to rebuild his career from the ground up in a new world.
Erisland or Erislandy Lara Santoya's career is defined by both technical brilliance and high-stakes drama. Born on 11 April 1983, the Cuban-American professional boxer rose to prominence as the captain of Cuba's national amateur team. His amateur pedigree was elite, highlighted by a gold medal at the 2005 World Championships, where he defeated notable opponents like the Russian Andrey Balanov and the Olympic champion Bakhtiyar Artayev.
However, his path to professional stardom was interrupted by political upheaval. During the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Lara attempted to defect from Cuba. The attempt failed; he was apprehended by Brazilian authorities and returned to Cuba, where officials imposed an indefinite ban on his boxing practice. Undeterred, Lara orchestrated a second escape in 2008, using a speedboat to reach Mexico. This successful defection eventually led him to Germany, where he joined the Arena Box-Promotion stable alongside other former Cuban champions.
Since transitioning to the professional ranks in early 2009, Lara has become a multi-division world champion, holding WBA titles in both the super welterweight and middleweight classes. His fighting style is characterized by extreme precision and defensive mastery. In a 2011 fight against Paul Williams, CompuBox data showed Lara landed 49% of his power punches compared to just 21% for Williams. He has faced the era's greatest names, including a controversial split-decision loss to Canelo Álvarez in 2014, a fight where Lara's superior jab—landing 55 to Álvarez's 9—was a defining feature of the bout.
