How a Canadian airport evolved from a simple hangar into a sprawling commercial hub
In short: Edmonton International Airport, now Canada's fifth-busiest, began as a modest arch hangar in 1960. Today, it spans nearly 7,000 acres, serving as a critical hub for Northern Canada and a unique destination that hosts everything from luxury outlet malls and high-tech greenhouses to specialized medical evacuation and emergency operations.
Located 30 km south of downtown Edmonton in Leduc County, the airport was established on a site selected by Transport Canada to serve the region. When it opened on November 15, 1960, its primary terminal was a repurposed arch hangar. The facility underwent significant evolution, including the construction of an international-style terminal in 1963 that still serves as the North Terminal. This early era was marked by artistic ambition, such as the commissioning of the mural 'Bush Pilot in Northern Sky' by Jack Shadbolt, which remains a fixture of the airport today.
The airport's trajectory shifted in 1995 following a municipal plebiscite where 77% of voters supported consolidating all scheduled jet passenger services at the site. This mandate triggered a series of major infrastructure projects, including the 1998–2005 redevelopment, which expanded capacity to 5.5 million passengers. Subsequent expansions in 2013 added new gates, boarding bridges, and advanced baggage systems. By 2022, the airport officially rebranded as YEG, reflecting its IATA identifier and its status as a major international gateway.
Beyond passenger travel, the airport functions as a versatile industrial and emergency hub. It houses the Edmonton Area Control Centre, which manages aircraft movements across Alberta and the high Arctic. During the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire, the facility acted as a critical way-station for thousands of evacuees and a base for aerial firefighting. The site also hosts diverse commercial ventures, including the Premium Outlet Collection mall and a massive greenhouse facility, illustrating how modern airports have transformed into multi-functional economic engines that extend far beyond the runway.
