Fujairah is the only UAE emirate with a coastline exclusively on the Indian Ocean
In short: While its peers face the Persian Gulf, Fujairah looks toward the Gulf of Oman. This unique geography, shielded by the Hajar mountains, creates a distinct micro-climate and a history defined by trade routes rather than oil-rich waters. It remains a fascinating outlier in the modern United Arab Emirates.
Fujairah occupies a singular position within the United Arab Emirates. Spanning roughly 1,166 square kilometers, it is the only member of the federation that lacks a coastline on the Persian Gulf, instead sitting entirely along the Gulf of Oman. This geographic isolation, reinforced by the rugged Hajar mountain range, has historically shaped its development. For centuries, the region was known as the Shamaliyah and remained under the influence of Muscat until 1850, when the Al Qasimi of Sharjah took control of the area.
The emirate’s path to sovereignty was long and complex. In 1901, Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al Sharqi broke away from Sharjah, though his independence went unrecognized by the British for decades. It was not until 1952 that Fujairah finally entered into treaty relations with Britain, primarily because oil exploration firms required a recognized local authority to sign concessions. By 1971, the emirate officially joined the United Arab Emirates. Today, it operates as an absolute monarchy under Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, who has ruled since 1974.
Modern Fujairah balances traditional roots with strategic economic shifts. While its economy relies on federal subsidies from Abu Dhabi, it has cultivated a niche as a bunkering port and a hub for mining and cement production. The 2012 opening of the Habshan–Fujairah oil pipeline further cemented its role in regional energy logistics. Despite rapid modernization and the growth of free trade zones, the emirate retains a strong connection to its past, evidenced by the 15th-century Al Badiyah Mosque—the oldest in the country—and archaeological sites dating back 4,000 years.
