In short: In 1909, a British engineer hunting for silver stumbled upon coal in the Udi Ridge, forever changing the trajectory of Enugu. This discovery turned a local settlement into a strategic colonial hub, a symbol of anti-colonial resistance, and eventually, the heart of Igboland and a modern center for technology.

The name Enugu, derived from the Igbo phrase Enu Ugwu, translates to the top of the hill. The region's modern history began in 1909 when British mining engineer Albert Kitson arrived, seeking silver but finding coal instead. By 1914, the colonial administration had begun shipping coal to Britain, supported by a new railway system. This industrial activity spurred rapid growth, leading to the city of Enugu acquiring township status in 1917. The colonial legacy remains visible today in the Georgian architecture and narrow roads of the Government Reserved Area.

Enugu State has served as a pivotal political center throughout Nigeria's history. It was the capital of the Southern Provinces, the Eastern Region, and the short-lived Republic of Biafra during the Nigerian Civil War. Following the war and the subsequent administrative reorganizations, the current Enugu State was formed in 1991. Today, it is governed by an executive governor and a council of commissioners, with Peter Mbah serving as the current executive governor since his inauguration on 29 May 2023.

Economically, the state remains largely rural and agrarian, with yams, rice, and cassava as primary crops. However, it is also a hub for services and manufacturing. Recent initiatives, such as the 2026 establishment of the Enugu-Haier Tech Factory, reflect a push toward technology. The state also hosts Nigeria's first indigenous university, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and maintains a robust network of educational and medical institutions. With its strategic location at the intersection of major transport routes and its ongoing investments in CNG-powered transit and electric vehicles, Enugu continues to evolve from its coal-mining roots into a modern commercial and cultural center.
