The energy giant born from a massive political filibuster
In short: In 2006, a French legislative merger faced a record-breaking 137,449 amendments. This massive political blockade threatened to delay the creation of a global energy titan for a decade, yet the company eventually emerged to reshape the global energy landscape.
The modern identity of Engie is the product of complex corporate and political maneuvering. The company was formed on 22 July 2008 through the merger of Gaz de France and Suez. This union was highly contentious; in August 2006, the political left submitted 137,449 amendments to the proposed legislation, a record-breaking number that, under normal parliamentary procedure, would have required ten years to process.
The company's roots are even older, tracing back to the 1858 foundation of the Universal Suez Canal Company. Its predecessor, Suez, was a result of nearly two centuries of reorganizations, including the 1822 founding of the Dutch company Algemeene Nederlandsche Maatschappij ter begunstiging van de volksvlijt by King William I of the Netherlands. Gaz de France, meanwhile, was established by the French government in 1946.
Under the leadership of CEO Isabelle Kocher from 2016 to 2020, the company underwent a significant strategic pivot. Kocher led the decision to exit coal activities and move toward decarbonized, decentralized, and digitized energy. This involved a massive shift in capital, including a plan to invest €22 billion in renewables and energy services, funded by the disposal of €15 billion in assets.
Despite these transitions toward renewable energy, natural gas, and nuclear power, the company's primary activities still largely revolve around fossil fuels. With 96,454 staff and €93.86 billion in turnover, Engie's 2022 international activities spanned 27 European nations and 48 countries globally.
