Enugu means hill top, yet the coal city sits at the foot
Igbo Enugu Ugwui literally means hill top, but the urban core grew at the base of the Udi escarpment after coal was confirmed under Enugwu Ngwo by nineteen thirteen. Township status arrived in nineteen seventeen; the shortened name Enugu stuck from nineteen twenty-eight.
Geologist Albert Ernest Kitson began surveying for the Imperial Institute in nineteen oh three and struck coal by nineteen oh nine. Frederick Lugard labelled the colliery Enugu Coal Camp to separate it from the hill village above. Udi mine opened in nineteen fifteen, then yielded to Iva Valley; the Eastern Line to Port Harcourt finished in nineteen sixteen so West Africa's only major coalfield could export through the sea. European and African quarters were split by the Ogbete River, with a Government Reserved Area north of it.
Earlier, Nike communities tied to the Aro Confederacy controlled local slave routes until British forces defeated the Aro between December nineteen oh one and March nineteen oh two. Industrial camps such as Alfred's Hill and Aaron's Hill housed Onitsha and Ezeagu labour leaders. Miner numbers rose from about six thousand in nineteen forty-eight to eight thousand in nineteen fifty-eight, and the city's population hit sixty-two thousand by nineteen fifty-two. On eighteen November nineteen forty-nine, British police killed twenty-one striking miners and wounded fifty-one at Iva Valley, an episode that fed nationalist Zikist organising.
Enugu became Eastern Region capital in nineteen thirty-eight, a municipality in nineteen fifty-six, and later capital of successive eastern states, remaining capital of Enugu State after the nineteen ninety-one split from Anambra. Despite the hill-top name, hills nearby may reach one thousand metres while the city rests in the Cross River basin and Benue trough over Cretaceous and Tertiary coal measures more than three hundred million tonnes thick in seams one to two metres deep. An estimated eight hundred seventy-six thousand people lived across its three local government areas in a twenty twenty-four estimate. Coal built the skyline; geology still underwrites the name's irony.
