In short: Evan Bayh was once considered an unbeatable force in Indiana politics. After serving as the nation's youngest governor and a long-tenured U.S. Senator, his political trajectory took a sharp turn, leading to a lucrative private sector career and a surprising electoral defeat in his home state.

Born in 1955 to Senator Birch Bayh, Evan Bayh entered politics in 1986 as Indiana's Secretary of State. He achieved national prominence as the youngest governor in the United States at the time of his election, serving two terms from 1989 until 1997. His popularity was significant; by the end of his second term, his approval rating reached nearly 80 percent.

In 1998, Bayh won a U.S. Winning 64% of the vote, he secured the Senate position with the highest percentage ever achieved by a Democrat in an Indiana race. He held this seat until 2011, when he unexpectedly announced he would not seek reelection. This decision left the seat to his predecessor, Dan Coats, and triggered a period of scrutiny regarding his activities during his final year in office.

Following his departure from the Senate, Bayh's net worth saw a dramatic increase. While he reported assets between $6.8 million and $8.0 million during his final year in Congress, his net worth rose to an estimated $13.9 million to $48 million after he entered the private sector. Between January 2015 and October 2016, he earned over $6 million from various roles, including work for the law firm McGuireWoods and Apollo Global Management.

Bayh's political comeback attempt in 2016 ended in his first-ever defeat in Indiana. Running to reclaim his former Senate seat, he was defeated by Republican Todd Young, who won with 52.1% of the vote to Bayh's 42.4%.
