From local school boards to the governor's mansion
In short: Mike Braun moved from local school board service to the Indiana governorship. After building a massive automotive supply company and serving in the U.S. Senate, he secured a landslide victory in 2024. His journey highlights a shift from Democratic primaries to becoming a prominent Republican figure in national politics.
Born in Jasper, Indiana, in 1954, Mike Braun built a foundation in local governance and private enterprise before ascending to state and national leadership. He served on the Jasper Consolidated School District board from 2004 to 2014, providing a local base for his entry into the Indiana House of Representatives in 2014. During his time as a state representative, he focused on infrastructure, coauthoring legislation in 2017 to secure long-term funding for the maintenance of Indiana's roads and highways.
Braun's transition to national politics was marked by a shift from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party in 2012. He argued that his previous participation in Democratic primaries was a result of local voting patterns in Dubois County, where Republican-leaning voters often participated in Democratic primaries to influence local elections. In 2018, he defeated Democratic incumbent Joe Donnelly to join the U.S. Senate. As a senator, he became a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, voting against his conviction in both 2020 and 2021 impeachment trials, and casting doubt on the legitimacy of the 2020 election.
His business background provided a significant platform for his political identity. After earning an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1978, Braun returned to Indiana to manage Meyer Distributing. He grew his wife's family business from 15 employees to over 300 and eventually acquired Meyer Body Inc. in 1986, fully owning it by 1995. This experience as a CEO of an automotive supply company informed his political stance on trade, where he eventually supported Trump's tariffs despite his earlier advocacy for free trade.
Braun shifted his focus from the Senate to a gubernatorial bid in Indiana during 2024. Following a May 2024 Republican primary win, he attained the governorship in November 2024. The scale of his triumph stood out; by beating Jennifer McCormick (Democrat) and Donald Rainwater (Libertarian) by 13.3%, he achieved the widest open-seat gubernatorial gap in Indiana since 1980. His platform combines conservative stances on abortion and gun rights with a call for the Republican Party to address climate change more seriously.
