The teenage striker rewriting the record books for Brighton and Ireland
In short: At just 18, Evan Ferguson became the youngest Premier League goalscorer for both Brighton and the Republic of Ireland. From his beginnings in Bettystown to striking goals in Serie A, the Irish striker's rapid ascent has caught the attention of the footballing elite.
Born on 19 October 2004 in Bettystown, County Meath, Evan Ferguson has experienced a meteoric rise through professional football. He began his journey with the Dublin schoolboy club St Kevin's Boys at age four before moving to the Bohemians youth section. By December 2020, he had already secured a League of Ireland U17 Division title with Bohemians.
His transition to senior football was remarkably swift. He made his senior debut for Bohemians on 11 July 2019, aged 14, becoming the club's youngest ever senior player. After signing for Brighton & Hove Albion's academy in January 2021, he made his Premier League debut for the club on 19 February 2022 against Burnley. By the end of the 2023–24 season, he had scored 10 goals in 25 appearances, earning Brighton's Young Player of the Season award.
Ferguson's technical versatility has been noted by experts like Alan Shearer, who praised his ability to use both feet, his heading, pace, and aggression. His impact extends to the international stage; he has represented the Republic of Ireland at U15, U17, and U21 levels, and has become a key figure for the senior national team. His career has seen him navigate significant milestones, including a loan spell at West Ham United and a move to Serie A side Roma in July 2025.
Despite his success, his career has faced challenges, such as an ankle injury in late 2023 that required ligament surgery and sidelined him for six months. However, his resilience has seen him return to competitive action, continuing to represent both club and country on the European stage.
