How a viral fan video transformed a struggling K-pop group into global stars
In short: Formed in 2012, EXID initially faced slow growth and significant lineup changes. Their trajectory shifted permanently in 2014 when a fan-recorded video of member Hani performing their song Up & Down went viral. This unexpected digital momentum propelled the group to the top of the charts and redefined their career.
The group was established in 2012 under AB Entertainment by producer Shinsadong Tiger, originally featuring members Yuji, Dami, Haeryung, Hani, and Jeonghwa, with Elly joining shortly after. Early challenges were immediate; the group's debut was delayed by a leg injury, and by April 2012, three members departed to pursue other interests. They were replaced by Solji and Hyelin, stabilizing the quintet that would eventually achieve fame. Despite early efforts, their initial releases saw modest performance, with their debut single Whoz That Girl selling 840,000 digital copies.
The turning point arrived in late 2014. After Up & Down failed to make a significant impact upon its August release, a viral video of Hani’s performance catalyzed a massive resurgence. The song climbed the real-time charts and eventually reached number one on the Gaon Singles Chart. This success validated the group's persistence, leading to multiple music show wins in early 2015 and establishing them as a prominent force in the industry. They continued to build on this momentum with successful EPs like Ah Yeah and the studio album Street.
The group’s later years were marked by both resilience and evolution. In 2016, Solji was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, forcing her into a hiatus that lasted until 2018. During this period, the remaining members continued to promote and tour, including an Asian tour in 2017. By 2019, the members began leaving their agency, Banana Culture, to pursue individual paths. However, they maintained their bond, eventually reuniting in 2022 for their tenth anniversary. Notably, Hani secured the trademark rights to the group's name, allowing the members to manage their own creative and business activities independently, marking a significant shift toward autonomy in their professional journey.
