How an oil-funded club became the heartbeat of the Fergana Valley football scene
In short: Founded in 1962, FC Neftchi Fergana has evolved from a Soviet-era regional side into a dominant force in Uzbek football. Financed by the Fergana Oil Refinery, the club maintains a fierce, historic rivalry known as the O'zbek Classikosi, defining the competitive landscape of the nation's top division for decades.
Established in 1962 as Neftyanik Fergana, the club spent nearly three decades competing in the Soviet Second League. Its trajectory shifted significantly in 1990 when it secured the league title, earning promotion to the Soviet First League. By 1991, the team reached its highest historical achievement in the Soviet system, finishing in seventh place. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the club transitioned into the newly formed Uzbekistan Higher League in 1992, where it quickly established itself as a perennial contender.
The club's identity is deeply tied to its intense rivalries, most notably with Pakhtakor Tashkent. This competition, which began in 1992, is colloquially referred to as the O'zbek Classikosi, mirroring the famous Spanish Clasico. The two clubs shared the inaugural league title in 1992 after finishing with identical point totals. Beyond this national rivalry, Neftchi maintains strong regional tensions with fellow Fergana Valley clubs, including Navbahor Namangan and FK Andijan, both of which have been staples of the Uzbek football scene.
Success for Neftchi has been consistent, marked by six Uzbekistan championships, including a title win in 2025. The club has also finished as the league runner-up nine times and earned a bronze medal in 2008. Its infrastructure reflects this ambition; after playing at the historic Fargona Stadium—built in 1932—for decades, the club moved to the modern 20,000-seat Istiqlol Stadium in 2015. This transition marked a new chapter for a team that has remained a constant, uninterrupted presence in the top tier of Uzbek football since the league's inception.
