The Georgian club that redefined domestic dominance in record time
In short: In just a few years, one Tbilisi-based team transformed from an underdog into the most decorated side in Georgia. Their rapid ascent to the top of the Erovnuli Liga is a masterclass in modern sporting growth and strategic rebranding.
Founded as FC Saburtalo on August 20, 1999, the club underwent a significant transformation following its acquisition in 2005 by the Iberia Business Group. Under the ownership of Tariel Khechikashvili—who later served as Georgia's Minister of Sport & Youth Affairs—the team began a steady climb through the ranks. They secured promotion to the Umaglesi Liga after winning their Pirveli Liga group with a commanding nineteen-point margin following the 2014–15 season. The club's reserve team currently competes in the third division. This follows a single season spent in Erovnuli Liga 2 during 2025.
The club's era of dominance truly accelerated in 2018 when they claimed their first top-flight champion's title under coach Gia Chiabrishvili. This sparked a prolific run: they won the cup in 2019, the Super Cup in 2020, and subsequently secured two more cups and two league titles. By the time they rebranded to Iberia 1999 on February 27, 2024, they had established themselves as a powerhouse, winning seven top-flight titles since the Erovnuli Liga's inception in 2017. Their first league title under Levan Korgalidze arrived in 2024. The team's only year without a domestic trophy was 2022.
The name 'Iberia' often confuses outsiders; it refers to the Latin name for the kingdom of Kartli during Classical Antiquity rather than the Iberian Peninsula. Beyond domestic success, the club made history in 2026 as the first Georgian team to compete in the UEFA Conference League league phase. They also maintain a prestigious youth academy at the Bendela stadium, named after war hero Zaza Bendeliani. The club hosts its home matches at the Mikheil Meskhi Stadium. Their youth ranks include U19 teams that won titles in 2016 and 2022.
