From Roman roads to football glory: the rise of KF Egnatia
In short: Founded in 1934, the Rrogozhinë-based club has transformed from an amateur side into a top-tier force. After nearly a century of evolution, Egnatia recently secured its first Kategoria Superiore title, proving that persistence can turn a local team into a national champion.
The identity of KF Egnatia is deeply rooted in the geography of the Rrogozhinë area. The club's name is a tribute to the ancient Via Egnatia, a vital Roman road constructed in the 2nd century BC under the supervision of Gnaeus Egnatius, the Roman proconsul of Macedonia. This historical connection provides a sense of permanence to a club that has undergone several identity shifts, moving from its founding name, 22 Shtatori Rrogozhinë, to Vullneti Rrogozhinë in 1991, before finally settling on Egnatia in 1998.
The club's journey through the tiers of Albanian football has been marked by periods of struggle and sudden ascent. After an initial promotion in the 2003–04 season resulted in immediate relegation, the club spent years rebuilding. A significant turning point occurred on 2 May 2021, when Egnatia secured promotion back to the Kategoria Superiore after a 1–0 victory against local rivals Besa Kavajë. This momentum carried them toward their historic first championship title, which they finally clinched on 26 May 2024 by defeating Partizani in the final.
Egnatia's recent success has extended onto the European stage. In the 2026–27 UEFA Europa League play-off round, the club demonstrated its growing strength by eliminating the Irish side Shamrock Rovers with a 6–4 aggregate score. This achievement guaranteed them a place in a European club competition group stage for the first time since 2017. As the club continues to expand, including plans for a new training complex and a new stand named after the late Raphael Dwamena, it continues to cement its place in the modern Albanian footballing landscape.
