The football club born from Baku's 'black gold' and 'white gold'
In short: In 1937, Baku was already synonymous with oil. When the workers formed a football team, they didn't need to choose a name—the industry provided it. But their colors told a deeper story of Azerbaijan’s dual economic identity, blending the wealth of the earth with the fields above.
Founded on March 18, 1937, Neftçi Peşəkar Futbol Klubu (the 'Oilmen') emerged from Baku's status as a major oil hub. While their name honored the 'black gold' of the petroleum industry, their iconic black-and-white kit was a deliberate nod to a second pillar of prosperity: cotton, known as 'white gold.' This duality reflected the economic landscape of the Azerbaijani SSR at the time.
The club’s early years were marked by Soviet competition. They played under the name Neftyanik until 1968, notably achieving their greatest Soviet-era success in 1966 by securing bronze medals in the USSR Championship. This feat was sealed on November 30 with a 3–0 victory over Spartak Moscow, finishing just two points behind the runners-up.
Neftçi holds a unique distinction as one of only two Azerbaijani clubs to have participated in every Azerbaijan Premier League championship to date. They became a pioneer for the nation in 2012, becoming the first Azerbaijani side to reach the group stage of a European competition (the UEFA Europa League) after a 4–2 aggregate win over APOEL.
The club's history is one of resilience, surviving World War II—during which players like Mirmehdi Aghayev were killed in action—and navigating various eras of ownership and management. From their first official match on May 24, 1937, to their current home at the 10,289-capacity Neftçi Arena, the club remains a central pillar of Azerbaijani sports culture.
