The philosophy of movement behind a Ukrainian football club
In short: In the world of sports, names often carry weight beyond mere branding. For FC Rukh Lviv, the name is an existential statement. Founded on the belief that "Movement" is life, the club evolved from a local children's school into a top-flight competitor.
The club’s origins are rooted in a specific philosophical choice made in 2003 by Myron Markevych. While serving as the head coach of FC Karpaty Lviv, Markevych established FC Rukh Vynnyky. When questioned about the name "Rukh," he explained that it translates to "Movement" and represents his view that movement is synonymous with life. This ideological foundation preceded the formation of a children's football school in June 2003, led by Yuriy Hdanskyi and several other trainers. The academy's early staff included trainers like Ihor Didyk and Markiyan Shkraba. These figures helped build the foundation for future talent.
The transition from a youth academy to a professional entity occurred in 2009 under President Hryhoriy Kozlovskyy. Because the club was based in Vynnyky—a satellite town of Lviv—it initially faced logistical complexities, navigating separate championships for both the city and the oblast. After establishing stability, the side secured the National amateur football championship during 2014 before attracting attention in 2015 via the recruitment of ex-Dynamo Kyiv internationals Maksim Shatskikh and Oleksandr Aliyev. The club currently plays its home matches at a stadium named after Bohdan Markevych. This man served as a primary sponsor while also coaching juniors.
Despite a period of significant growth that saw them compete in the Ukrainian Premier League for six seasons, the club's trajectory has seen recent shifts. After withdrawing from the top flight in the 2025-26 season, they are set to compete in the Ukrainian Second League for 2026-27. The club continues to invest in its infrastructure, maintaining a youth academy and reserve teams that have even qualified for international competitions like the UEFA Youth League. In 2017, the organization unveiled a new emblem featuring black and gold colors. Additionally, they established a second team in 2023 to play in the Second League.
