In short: From its 1946 origins as Dynamo to its current name, Akhmat Grozny has navigated extreme upheaval. Once displaced by conflict and forced to play in a neighboring city, the club's history is a resilient chronicle of shifting names, political transitions, and a return to its home soil.

Founded in 1946 as Dynamo, the club underwent several identity shifts before becoming Terek Grozny in 1958. In June 2017, the club was renamed Akhmat, honoring Akhmad Kadyrov, the former President of the Chechen Republic. This period of transition followed a decade of instability; during the 1990s, the club was temporarily disbanded due to the war in Chechnya.

The conflict also forced the club into exile. From the 1990s until 2007, the team could not play in its home city, instead hosting matches in the nearby resort city of Pyatigorsk, located in the Stavropol Krai. It was not until the start of the 2008 Premier League season that the Russian Football Union granted the club the right to host matches back in Grozny, initially at the Sultan Bilimkhanov Stadium.

The club's competitive peaks and valleys include winning the Russian Cup and the Russian First Division in 2004. While they have experienced the highs of European qualification, they have also faced the lows of relegation and relegation play-offs, such as the 2024–25 season where they had to defeat Ural Yekaterinburg to remain in the Premier League. The club's infrastructure has also evolved, marked by the 2011 opening of the Akhmat-Arena.

The club's leadership has seen notable international figures, such as the 18-month tenure of former Dutch international Ruud Gullit, who managed the side in 2011. The club has also maintained a global reach through farm teams, including FC Lotus-Terek Yaoundé in Cameroon.
