Eleven deep glacial valleys in New York hold a history of ice and reform.
In short: Carved by the Laurentide Ice Sheet, the Finger Lakes are more than just a scenic group of eleven narrow, deep waterways. This region, once a stronghold of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, became a crucible for American social reform, viticulture, and industrial innovation, all shaped by the unique geology of its glacial past.
The Finger Lakes originated as northward-flowing streams before being transformed by the Laurentide Ice Sheet, which moved south from the Hudson Bay area starting about two million years ago. During glacial maximums, subglacial meltwater and ice scoured these river valleys into deep, overdeepened basins. This process left some tributaries hanging as much as 120 meters above the valley floors. The lakes became ice-free around 14,400 years ago, eventually filling with organic-rich muds that have accumulated to the present day.
Beyond their geological significance, the lakes are central to the Haudenosaunee homeland. For nearly two centuries after first contact, the Haudenosaunee successfully resisted European colonization through political maneuvering. However, the American Revolutionary War and the 1779 Sullivan Expedition shattered their power, opening the region to rapid settlement by New Englanders and Pennsylvanians. By the 19th century, the area earned the nickname 'the burned-over district' due to the intense religious revivals of the Second Great Awakening and a surge of utopian and reform movements, including the women's suffrage movement and the Underground Railroad.
Today, the region is New York's largest wine-producing area, with over 400 wineries benefiting from the 'lake effect.' The great depth of the lakes moderates temperatures, protecting grapes from disastrous spring and early autumn frosts. This viticultural success is built on a landscape that also hosts significant higher education institutions and a complex industrial history, ranging from the early aviation experiments of Glenn Curtiss to modern debates over natural gas fracking, which led to a statewide ban in 2014.
