In short: Nestled in a glacial valley in British Columbia, Fernie is a mountain town defined by its coal-mining origins and dramatic landscape. Though it has survived two catastrophic fires and shifting economic tides, this resilient community remains a hub for winter sports and a testament to early twentieth-century urban planning.

Founded in 1898 and incorporated in 1904, Fernie sits in the Elk Valley of southeastern British Columbia. It holds the unique distinction of being the only city-class municipality in Canada entirely surrounded by the Rocky Mountains. The townsite was laid out within a doglegged glacial valley, drained by the Elk River and fed by tributaries like Coal, Lizard, and Fairy Creeks. Its geography is dominated by peaks such as Mount Fernie, The Three Sisters, and the Lizard Range, the latter of which hosts the Fernie Alpine Resort.

The city's history is inextricably linked to the Crowsnest Coal Field. Prospector William Fernie established the local coal industry in 1897 after pioneer Michael Phillips discovered coal deposits in the region. While mining never occurred within the city limits, Fernie served as the administrative and commercial heart of the industry. The town faced significant adversity early on; a 1902 mine explosion killed 109 workers, and two massive fires in 1904 and 1908 leveled the downtown core. Following the 1908 fire, the city rebuilt with brick and stone, creating a stately, Victorian-style aesthetic that persists today.

Throughout the twentieth century, Fernie experienced boom-and-bust cycles tied to global coal prices. As local mines like those at Coal Creek closed by 1960, the economy shifted toward open-pit mining further upriver and, increasingly, tourism. Today, the city serves as a residential base for mine labor and a destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Despite its industrial roots, the town has evolved into a modern community, evidenced by a 2021 census population of 6,320, marking a 17.1% increase from 2016. It remains a vital link on the transportation corridor crossing the Crowsnest Pass.
