In short: Martinique's quest for an official flag was anything but simple. After a failed competition and a design controversy involving a stock image, the island finally adopted a bold, pan-African symbol in early 2023. It is a design rooted in decades of political identity and deep cultural history.

The current flag of Martinique, adopted on 2 February 2023, is the rouge-vert-noir, or red-green-black. In 1968, Guy Cabort-Masson and Alex Ferdinand conceived this design, which arrived on the island via secret transport in 1971. It is a preferred symbol for Martinican independence activists and utilizes pan-African colors. The specific color scheme—red for the blood shed for liberty, black for a noble race, and green for the luxuriant vegetation of the motherland—is inspired by Marcus Garvey's pan-African flag of the UNIA.

The path to adoption was fraught with legal and procedural hurdles. In 2018, a local council competition for a flag and anthem was annulled by an administrative tribunal in November 2021 because the selection method was deemed outside the council's responsibilities. A subsequent public vote in 2022 saw very low turnout, with only 19,084 people voting for a flag out of an eligible population of approximately 300,000.

The final selection was decided by chance following a design controversy. The initial winner, a hummingbird design by Anaïs Delwaulle, was withdrawn on 23 January 2023 after concerns arose that it was identical to a Shutterstock stock image. This allowed the runner-up—the nationalist red-green-black flag—to be submitted to the Assembly. On 2 February 2023, the Assembly adopted it with 44 votes in favor and one abstention.

Because Martinique is a French overseas department and region, the flag of France also maintains official standing alongside the local symbol.
