In short: Located on the North American Plate, this lush Azorean island is famous for its pink hydrangeas and rugged volcanic peaks. Beyond its beauty, Flores served as a strategic naval battleground, a pirate haven, and a base for French missile tracking, all while remaining one of the most isolated places in Portugal.

Flores Island, part of the Azores' Western Group, is a geological anomaly situated on the North American Continental Plate. Formed by submarine volcanic activity during the Pleistocene, the island is defined by its Central Massif and coastal periphery. Its landscape is marked by maar structures and seven crater lakes, with peaks like Morro Alto reaching 914 metres. Volcanic activity continued into the Holocene, with significant eruptions occurring approximately 3,150 and 2,900 years ago.

The island's history is as dramatic as its terrain. Discovered in 1452 by Diogo de Teive, it was initially sparsely populated, with early settlers struggling against its isolated location and infertile soil. By the late 16th century, it became a site of international conflict, most notably the 1591 Battle of Flores, where Sir Richard Grenville’s ship, the Revenge, fought a Spanish fleet for fifteen hours. The island also became a regular port-of-call for pirates like Peter Easton, who reportedly married into the local leadership, and a hunting ground for American whalers and Confederate commerce raiders.

Modernization arrived slowly. Until the 20th century, communication relied on small sailing vessels, but the installation of telegraphs, radio, and telephone services eventually bridged the gap. A major turning point occurred in 1966 with the inauguration of a French missile tracking installation, which spurred the development of essential infrastructure, including an airport and hospital. Following the French departure in 1994, tourism emerged as the primary industry for the island's 3,428 inhabitants, who remain distributed across two municipalities, Santa Cruz das Flores and Lajes das Flores.
