Florida's 20th District: A Democratic Stronghold Stretching from Broward County to Lake Okeechobee
In short: Located in Southeast Florida, the 20th congressional district stands out as the state's most reliably Democratic territory. Spanning from dense urban precincts in Broward County to the rural shores of Lake Okeechobee, this district reflects a unique political geography shaped by decades of redistricting and shifting community boundaries.
The 20th congressional district is a significant political entity in Southeast Florida, currently holding a Cook Partisan Voting Index rating of D+22, which marks it as the most Democratic-leaning district in the entire state. Its boundaries encompass a diverse array of majority-Black precincts, primarily situated within western and central Broward County, while also extending into a portion of southeastern Palm Beach County. The district's reach is geographically expansive, stretching inland to include communities along the southeastern shores of Lake Okeechobee, such as Belle Glade, and incorporating major infrastructure like the Palm Beach International Airport.
The district's current configuration is a product of the 2020 redistricting cycle, which saw notable changes to its footprint. For instance, the city of Miramar was removed from the district and reassigned to the 24th and 25th districts. This evolution is part of a longer history of boundary adjustments; between 1993 and 2013, the district was centered in Fort Lauderdale and included parts of Miami-Dade County. Much of that former territory now comprises the 23rd district, while the current 20th district largely occupies the area that functioned as the 23rd district during that earlier period.
The district serves a wide variety of municipalities and neighborhoods. In Broward County, it includes areas such as North Lauderdale, Lauderhill, Lauderdale Lakes, Tamarac, and parts of Pompano Beach and Sunrise. In Palm Beach County, its reach includes Lake Park, Riviera Beach, and the inland agricultural communities near Lake Okeechobee. As of April 21, 2026, the seat has been vacant following the resignation of U.S. representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick. The district remains a focal point for understanding the complex demographic and political landscape of modern Florida, illustrating how legislative boundaries can reshape representation across both urban centers and rural inland regions.
